Indications:
          Upper & lower resp tract infections, odontostomatological infections, skin & soft tissue infections, acute otitis media, STD due to Chlamydia trachomatis, chancroid due to Haemophilus ducreyi & uncomplicated genital infection due to non-multiresistant Neisseria gonorrhoea. Prophylaxis (alone or in combination w/ rifabutin) against Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAC) infection prevalent in patients w/ advanced HIV. IV vial Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) & pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in patients who require initial IV therapy.
Contraindications:
          Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients, Known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, macrolides or ketolides. Hereditary fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or saccharase-isomaltase deficiency.
Special Precautions:
          Severe renal impairment (GFR <10 mL/min). Significant hepatic disease. Avoid co-administration w/ ergot derivatives. Observe signs of superinfection w/ nonsusceptible organisms including fungi. Consider Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea in patients who present diarrhea following therapy. Prolonged cardiac repolarization & QT interval. Pregnancy & lactation. Powd for oral susp Diabetic patients. IV vial Do not administer as IV bolus or IM inj.
Dosage:
          Tab/Powd for oral susp Adult Treatment of STD due to Chlamydia trachomatis or susceptible Neisseria gonorrhoea 1000 mg as a single dose. Prophylaxis against MAC infections in patients w/ HIV 1200 mg once/wk. All other indications 1500 mg to be given as 500 mg daily for 3 days. Childn Max: 1500 mg. Total dose: 30 mg/kg. Tab >45 kg Adult dose. Ped streptococcal pharyngitis Powd for oral susp >45 kg Adult dose; 36-45 kg 400 mg; 26-35 kg 300 mg; 15-25 kg 200 mg; <15 kg 10 mg/kg. Doses to be taken once daily on days 1-3 or alternatively taken as a single dose on day 1, then ½ the daily dose on days 2-5. Elderly Adult dose. IV infusion Adult CAP 500 mg as a single daily IV dose for at least 2 days, followed by oral azithromycin 500 mg as a single daily dose to complete a 7- to 10-day course of therapy. PID 500 mg as a single daily dose for 1-2 days, followed by oral azithromycin 250 mg as a single daily dose to complete a 7-day course of therapy.
