Contents:

          Cefuroxime axetil

Indications:

          Upper & lower resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue infections; gonorrhoea, acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis. May be used as sequential therapy to Cefuroxime Na salt (Zinacef) in the treatment of pneumonia & acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.

Contraindications:

          Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

Special Precautions:

          Anaphylactic reaction to penicillins or other β-lactams. Prolonged use. Monitor for pseudomembranous colitis. False -ve result in the ferricyanide test may occur. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <3 mth.

Dosage:

          Adult Most infections, mild to moderate lower resp tract infections (eg bronchitits), pyelonephritis 250 mg bd. UTI 125 mg bd. More severe lower resp tract infections or if pneumonia is suspected 500 mg bd. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1 g as a single dose. Childn Most infections 125 mg bd, to a max of 250 mg daily. Childn ≥2 yr w/ otitis media or more severe infections 250 mg bd, to a max of 500 mg daily. Duration: 7 days (5-10 days). Sequential therapy in pneumonia Zinacef 1.5 g IM/IV bd or tds for 48-72 hr, followed by Zinnat 500 mg orally bd for 7-10 days, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis Zinacef 750 mg IM/IV bd or tds for 48-72 hr, followed by Zinnat 500 mg orally bd for 5-10 days.
