Indications:

          Urogenital trichomoniasis in the female (trichomonal vaginitis) and in the male. Nonspecific vaginitis. All forms of amoebiasis (intestinal and extraintestinal disease and that of symptomless cyst passers). Giardiasis. Acute ulcerative gingivitis. Acute dental infections. Anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores. Septicaemia, bacteraemia, brain abscess, necrotising pneumonia, osteomyelitis, puerperal sepsis, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, peritonitis and postoperative wound infections from which one or more pathogenic anaerobes have been isolated. The prevention of postoperative infections due to anaerobic bacteria, particularly species of bacteroides and anaerobic streptococci.

Contraindications:

          Known hypersensitivity to metronidazole.

Special Precautions:

          If administered for >10 days, haematological tests are recommended. Re-administer immediately after haemodialysis. Caution in patient w/ active disease of CNS except for brain abscess or hepatic encephalopathy. Pregnancy & lactation.

Dosage:

          Anaerobic infections Adult & childn >12 yr 100 mL IV infusion 8 hrly or 400 mg orally tds for 7 days, <12 yr As adult dose but single IV dose is based on 1.5 mL/kg body wt. Infant 7.5 mg/kg body wt orally for 7 days. Amoebiasis Adult & childn >10 yr 400-800 mg tds, 7-10 yr 200-400 mg tds, 3-7 yr 100-200 mg qds, 1-3 yr 100-200 mg tds. Duration: 5-10 days. Giardiasis Adult & childn >10 yr 2 g, 7-10 yr 1 g, 3-7 yr 600-800 mg, 1-3 yr 500 mg. To be taken once daily for 3 days. Acute ulcerative gingivitis Adult & childn >10 yr 200 mg tds, 7-10 yr 100 mg tds, 3-7 yr 100 mg bd, 1-3 yr 50 mg tds. Duration: 3 days. Trichomonas, GUT infection Flagyl 200 1 tab tds for 7 days. Flagyl 400 2 g as single dose once only or 2 tab in the morning & 3 tab in the evening for 2 consecutive days.
