Azithromycin.
Indications:
Upper resp tract infections eg sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis. Acute otitis media. Lower resp tract infections eg acute bronchitis, mild to moderately severe community-acquired pneumonia. Skin & soft tissue infections. Uncomplicated genital infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis urethritis & cervicitis.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to macrolides or ketolides. Severe liver disease.
Special Precautions:
Allergy to soya or peanut. Observe signs of superinfection w/ non-susceptible organisms including fungi. Clostridium difficile-associated
diarrhea ranging from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis. Patients at
increased risk for prolonged cardiac repolarisation. Severe renal
impairment. Patients w/ diabetes, phenylketonuria, neurological or
psychiatric disorders. Pregnancy & lactation.
Dosage:
Adult 1500 mg
administered as 500 mg/day for 3 consecutive days or given over a period
of 5 days w/ 500 mg on the 1st day then 250 mg on days 2-5. Uncomplicated Chlamydia trachomatis urethritis & cervicitis 1000 mg in 1 single dose. Childn
30 mg/kg administered as 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days or over a
period of 5 days starting w/ a single dose of 10 mg/kg on the 1st day
followed by 5 mg/kg/day on days 2-5.
